Whatever your interest is, we can provide information and advice
to help you to get the most out of your stay at Wood View. Maps
and routes are available for walkers/mountain bikers as well as
the option of a drop-off or pick-up if you need it. Timetables
are also available for the Settle to Carlisle Railway.
Walking…
The Southern Area of the Yorkshire Dales National Park is renowned
for it's stunning limestone scenery. This is Three Peaks country,
with the start of the classic 25 mile Three Peaks route at Horton
in Ribblesdale only ten minutes drive away. If you want something
a little less challenging then follow one of the old drover's
lanes that criss-cross the area and explore the limestone scars
and pavements of Oxenber, Moughton and Norber, or experience the
quiet solitude of Crummackdale.
Mountain Biking…
Austwick
is the ideal base for exploring this part of the Yorkshire Dales
on a mountain bike. The Pennine Cycle Way (Route 68), Yorkshire
Dales Cycle Way and the Pennine Bridleway National Trail pass
only a mile from the village. The area has terrain to suit all
tastes, whether you prefer a sedate ride along a bridleway or
some fast technical single track - the country around Austwick
can provide it. Wood View also has facilities for cleaning bikes
and drying kit, lockable bike storage & local trail knowledge
as David, the owner, also rides.
Bird
Watching…
The Yorkshire Dales National Park is an important habitat for
many species of birds, from Curlew, Oystercatcher and Dipper to
Red Grouse, Ring Ousel & Golden Plover. At nearby Malham Cove
the RSPB have an observation post for watching Peregrine Falcons.
Settle to Carlisle Railway…
Opened
in 1876, the Settle to Carlisle Railway is one of the country's
most famous and scenic railways. Catch the train at Settle station
and wind up the Ribble Valley to the 24 arch Ribblehead Viaduct,
through the Blea Moor Tunnel and on to the highest mainline station
in England at Dent. Then follow the high ground of the Pennines
to Appleby before dropping into the Eden Valley and on to Carlisle.
